Description

Discover the Pollino National Park through the Argentino River Valley
The Argentino River Valley with its oriented nature reserve has been recognized as a Site of Community Interest, and integrated into the Pollino National Park. The park has been included in the UNESCO Geosites as the Pollino World Geopark.
The valley crossed by the river of the same name, has picturesque gorges and overhangs that protect it from anthropogenic incidence. The valley is rich in plant and animal species, which live here almost undisturbed. Constant erosion, of wind and rain along its slopes, have given rise to authentic morphosculptures.
Caves, karst phenomena, landslides and collapses follow one another along the entire valley, creating an exceptional environment that is also one of the most important wilderness areas in southern Italy.
Due to its imperviousness, the valley in the past hosted hermit monks who had created their cenobia here, hosting saints such as St. Nilus of Rossano, St. Basil and St. Fantino. The valley is also home to unique botanical species such as the Loricato Pine, a true jewel of biodiversity and symbol of the Park. In this area, in addition to the various plant biodiversity, there are active Apennine wolves, roe deer, southern squirrels typical for their black coats, golden eagles, otters, badgers, black woodpeckers, peregrine falcons, eagle owls and imperial ravens. The Valley also formed an important communication route linking the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts, mainly between the city of Sybaris and Laos for the exchange of goods and agricultural products. The Valley offers its visitors a system of trails that allow for many challenging hikes or relaxing walks among nature, but also a botanical garden where it is possible to admire all the tree species vegetating in the Pollino National Park.
