Description

Embark on an 8.75-kilometer Pekoe Trail trek from Ella to Demodara. The highlight is the iconic Nine Arches Bridge in Demodara, followed by a scenic ascent through a local village and many more.
08:00 am: Commence your day with a Tuk-Tuk pickup from your Ella hotel, embarking on an unforgettable Pekoe Trail trekking adventure from Ella to Demodara, covering a distance of 8.75 kilometers. This trail is a distinguished segment of the Serendipity Trails Collection, spanning 300 kilometers and 22 stages within Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. It intricately weaves through an extensive network of tea trails, seamlessly connecting nature, its people, culture, and heritage, all while encapsulating the essence of the island's diversity.
08:30 am: As you depart from Ella town, following Passara Road, be on the lookout for a leftward-forking track. Follow this path through the Ella Forrest Reserve for approximately 2 kilometers until you reach the renowned Nine Arches Bridge, a captivating and well-visited landmark. The Nine Arches Bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky, is a viaduct bridge showcasing exemplary colonial-era railway construction in Sri Lanka. It is situated in Demodara, between the Ella and Demodara railway stations.
Cross the bridge, walk along the railway line for 100 meters, and then you'll spot a small path to your right. The ensuing 50 meters mark the most demanding section of today's hike as you ascend steps amidst the local village's houses. Soon, you'll find yourself on the village road, concluding the challenging climb. At this juncture, a welcoming local family offers fresh juice should you desire a refreshment. The views of the Nine Arches Bridge from this vantage point are truly breathtaking. You will have now beheld this marvel from both its eastern and western perspectives.
Next, you'll enter the Demodara Tea Estate, traversing a delightful tea trail. At the 4.5-kilometer mark, you'll diverge from the main trail, taking a second path to your left. If you glance back, you'll catch another glimpse of the Nine Arches Bridge, albeit more distantly. Follow this track for half a kilometer until you reach a small Buddhist shrine.
Demodara railway station, the 76th and penultimate station on the Main Line, stands 277.71 kilometers (172.56 miles) from Colombo. It is situated at an elevation of 912.5 meters (2,994 feet) above sea level and lies 8 kilometers from Badulla, the capital city of the Uva Province. This station is particularly noteworthy for its unique spiral rail line, famously known as the 'Demodara Loop.' The rail line passes beneath itself, forming a loop and emerging from a tunnel situated directly beneath the Demodara railway station. The rail loop extends for approximately 900 meters (3,000 feet), while the tunnel measures 320 meters (1,050 feet) in length.
12:30 pm: Your extraordinary trekking adventure concludes upon your arrival at Demodara Railway Station. You can return to your hotel by Tuk-Tuk, or for an even more memorable experience, consider taking the train back to Ella. Train schedules are available at the station, and the journey can be arranged based on train availability.
