A Journey Through Time: 400 Years of Galle Fort’s History
Join me on an immersive walking tour through Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where history unfolds through its streets, bastions, and colonial landmarks.

1. Churches, Tombstones & Grand Hotels
At the Great Dutch Protestant Church, discover how a vow for a child led to its construction. Inside, observe tombstones engraved with eerie symbols—grim reminders of colonial lifespans. Standing on Church Street, look at my historical paintings to see how this area evolved over centuries.
Before moving on, hear the tragic tale of the colonial post office, now stuck in a five-year renovation delay.
We pass by Amangalla Hotel, once the Dutch military headquarters, now transformed into the fort’s most luxurious hotel.

2. The Clock Tower & Galle’s Colonial Beginnings
Next, at the Clock Tower, a British-era structure built by local stonemasons, learn how this thriving trade port for Chinese, South Indian, and Arab merchants was seized by three European colonial powers.

3. The Moon Bastion & A Changing Landscape
At Moon Bastion, take in the Tsunami’s impact on the town. Compare how the old Dutch moat evolved into a racecourse, then the international cricket stadium, where locals still enjoy free matches.

4. The Star Bastion & Dutch Engineering
At Star Bastion, see how an ammunition store became a prison. Walk the fort’s narrow streets, noting Dutch, British, and Art Deco architecture. Spot the small drainage holes—part of a Dutch-era sewage system powered by ocean waves.

5. Peddlers’ Street & Lighthouse Street
Explore Peddlers’ Street, the fort’s commercial hub, lined with restaurants and boutiques. On Lighthouse Street, hear why it doesn’t lead to any lighthouse.

6. The Flag Rock & Aurora Bastions
At Flag Rock Bastion, my historical paintings illustrate how it became a signal station, guiding colonial ships safely into Galle’s harbor. At Aurora Bastion, imagine Dutch settlers watching the sunrise over docked fleets.

7. Dutch Legacies & Military History
At the Dutch hospital, once a medical center and now a bustling emporium, hear its transformation story. Learn about a ruthless Dutch commander with an eye patch, infamous for harsh discipline. Passing the Dutch rice store, now a Magistrate Court, envision hidden tunnels below, used for emergency escapes from Black Bastion into the harbor.

8. Dutch Wealth & Forgotten Landmarks
In front of the massive Dutch warehouse, understand how Amsterdam became the world’s richest city in the 18th century. This is where our walk ends.

Step into the Past, Walk Through History
This tour is more than sightseeing—it’s a journey through time, filled with stories of trade, war, and the people who shaped Galle Fort. Join me to uncover its secrets!
