A Day Along Taiwan’s North Coast: Rock, Wind, Art, and Sea Light
Our one-day journey from Taipei to the North Coast began with the excitement of escaping the city and heading toward the ocean. As the highway curved closer to the coastline, the sky widened, and the sound of waves replaced the city’s morning rush. Our first stop, Yehliu Geopark, introduced us to one of Taiwan’s most iconic landscapes. Walking along the narrow sandstone cape felt like stepping into a natural sculpture gallery. Wind-carved formations—like the famous Queen’s Head, Fairy Shoe, and Candle Rocks—stood proudly against the crashing waves. The contrast between golden rock and deep blue sea created a dramatic beauty unique to Yehliu. We lingered along the pathways, amazed at how thousands of years of wind and water shaped such extraordinary forms.
Leaving the geological wonders behind, we headed toward the warm, local charm of Jinshan Old Street. The narrow lanes were filled with food stalls, vendors calling out gently, and the aroma of freshly baked buns drifting through the air. We tasted Jinshan’s famous duck, sweet potato snacks, and handmade treats. The lively yet down-to-earth atmosphere offered an authentic glimpse into small-town Taiwanese life.
Next, we entered a completely different world at the Ju Ming Museum. Nestled in the hills overlooking the sea, the open-air museum blended art and nature harmoniously. Ju Ming’s large Taichi sculptures, positioned on vast green lawns, created a serene, almost meditative landscape. The military series, expressive and monumental, brought history and strength into artistic form. Walking through the outdoor spaces felt peaceful—the ocean breeze carried through the grounds, and sunlight softened the bold sculptures, making the visit both reflective and inspiring.
In the afternoon, we continued to Fuguei Cape Park, the northernmost point of Taiwan. The lighthouse, simple and white, stood quietly against wide open skies. The coastal path led us through views of waves rolling endlessly toward the horizon. It was the kind of place that invited slow breathing and silent appreciation.
Our next stop, the Laomei Green Reef, was a stunning natural wonder. Long volcanic trenches, covered in vibrant green algae, stretched along the shoreline like emerald ribbons. With waves washing over the formations, the scene felt surreal—beautiful, rare, and deeply tied to the rhythms of the ocean.
The final stop, the Coral Shell Temple, added a touch of whimsy to the day. Decorated entirely with seashells and coral, the temple shimmered with intricate patterns and textures. Every wall reflected the artistry of coastal culture.
As we returned to Taipei, the day felt rich with contrasts—rock and ocean, art and history, quiet cliffs and lively streets. The North Coast offered not just scenery, but stories shaped by wind, water, and people.
