Duration: 4 days

Description

Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, with an altitude of 4,566 m. It has some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife diversity of any mountain range in Tanzania.
Day 1 Arusha (1400m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m) After breakfast in Arusha, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Momela Gate in Arusha National Park. At this point, the porters will sort and pack your belongings for the hike while you and your guide check in at Tanzania National Park (Tanapa). You will then start your climb in Arusha National Park. The first day of hiking is similar to a backpacking trip; hikers can see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalo, and maybe even elephants near the trail. Due to the high likelihood of spotting wildlife, an armed ranger (employed through the National Park) is required to hike this portion of the hike with our group. As you continue hiking you will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and beautiful waterfalls at the foot of Mount Meru. Upon arrival at Miriakamba Hut (2500m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and laundry water for you. Enjoy a beautiful sunset, the reward for a hard day’s hiking! Day 2 Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Saddle Hut (3500m) After breakfast you will begin climbing the steep trail along the Saddle Ridge. You may see a variety of wild animals along the way! This walk offers stunning views of Mount Meru’s crater and ash disk. When you arrive at the camp, you can choose to hike Little Meru (3820m) with a guide for further acclimatization. You will be served an early dinner so you can be well rested before your midnight summit attempt. We recommend going to bed no later than 19:00. Sweet dreams! Day 3 Saddle Hut (3500m) – Summit Attempt (4566m) – Miriacamba Hut (2500m) Your guide will wake you up at 00:30 for hot tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt at 01.30. The trail starts with a steep gradient from Rhino Point (3800m) to Cobra Point (4350m). During the last hour of the hike, you'll climb up the rocky ridge between Meru Crater and interior cliffs. You will reach Mount Meru (4565m) at sunrise and enjoy stunning panoramic views of Mount Meru Ash Pan and Mount Kilimanjaro. Take your time to admire this once-in-a-lifetime view, then descend to the Saddle Hut for a short rest. You will then continue your descent to Miriakamba Hut (2500m) for dinner and a well-deserved night Day 4 Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Arusha (1400m) After a long, lazy rest (and plenty of After breakfast!) we will begin our final descent to Porta Momela. Our route will pass through dense forests and meadows where we may spot wild birds and herbivores. At the foot of Mount Meru you will be met by our driver who will take you safely back to Arusha.
