From Arusha: Mount Meru 3- or 4-Day Summit Trip 4 Day Climb

Scale the second highest mountain in Tanzania in this thrilling and challenging climb. Mount Meru, a dormant volcano that measures 4566 meters (14,979 feet) tall, is the perfect climb for those wanting a taste of high altitude trekking without going too high.

Meru is centred in Arusha National Park, with fertile slopes that rise above the surrounding savannah and are home to a variety of wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, buffalos, leopards, giraffes and different species of monkeys.

After a check of permits at the Park Headquarters, your tour starts with a drive to the Momella Park Gate with an armed Park Ranger to protect against wild animal threats. Follow the trail through montane forest, past waterfalls and oddly formed trees until you reach Mirakamba Hut.

On day 2, feel the air cool and thin as you ascend over 1000 meters to Saddle Hut. In the afternoon, embark on an acclimatization hike up to little Meru, and enjoy the picturesque views of Kilimanjaro over 80 kilometers away.

Day 3 starts at 2 a.m., following a path through scrubland to Rhino Point. Traverse the demanding narrow crater ridge until you reach the summit. From Socialist Peak, watch the sunrise over Kilimanjaro and explore Meru's crater and ash cone.

Your descent retraces your steps back down to Momella Gate, where you will be transferred to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration.
