For a 5-day itinerary covering Tarangire, Mto wa Mbu, Ngorongoro, and two days in the Serengeti, you'll experience some of the most iconic parks in Tanzania's Northern Circuit. itinerary that balances game drives, cultural experiences, and sightseeing:
Day 1: Tarangire National Park
Morning: Start your safari with a drive to Tarangire National Park (about 2 hours from Arusha).
Famous for its large elephant herds, baobab trees, and diverse bird species.
Game drive upon arrival, spotting elephants, lions, giraffes, and more.
Afternoon: Continue exploring the park after lunch. Tarangire has fewer tourists compared to other parks, offering a more serene experience.
Evening: Overnight at a lodge or campsite just outside the park.
Day 2: Mto wa Mbu & Drive to Ngorongoro
Morning: After breakfast, leave Tarangire for Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant village located near Lake Manyara (about 1.5-hour drive).
Take a cultural tour of the village, known for its blend of cultures and crafts. Visit local markets, banana plantations, and interact with different tribes.
Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Tanzanian lunch at a local restaurant or one of the lodges.
Afternoon: Drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (about 1 hour).
Relax at your lodge or camp with views of the Ngorongoro Crater, preparing for the next day’s adventure.
Evening: Overnight in a lodge or camp near the crater rim.
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater
Early Morning: Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world’s largest calderas and home to abundant wildlife, including the Big Five (elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos).
The crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a unique chance to see a dense concentration of wildlife within a small area.
Late Afternoon: After a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, continue your game drive before ascending back to the rim.
Evening: Begin the drive towards the Serengeti National Park (about 2-3 hours).
Day 4: Serengeti National Park
Morning: Enter the Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous wildlife parks in the world.
Spend the morning on a game drive, looking for lions, cheetahs, leopards, wildebeests, and zebras. Depending on the time of year, you might catch the Great Migration.
Afternoon: After a packed lunch, continue exploring the central Serengeti (Seronera area), known for its year-round game and iconic landscapes.
Evening: Overnight at a lodge or tented camp inside the park.
Day 5: Serengeti National Park & Return
Early Morning: Embark on an early game drive, maximizing your chances to spot predators on the hunt.
Optional: Take a hot air balloon safari at sunrise (this must be booked in advance).
Mid-Morning: After breakfast at your camp or lodge, head back for a final game drive before starting the journey back to Arusha.
Flight option: If you're pressed for time, you can take a small charter flight from Serengeti to Arusha (extra cost).
Late Afternoon: Arrive back in Arusha, where your safari ends.
