Ol Doinyo Lengai Overnight Sunrise Hike Ol Doinyo Lengai
ID: GYG793824-1558526
Category:
Country: Tanzania
Duration:
20:00 hours
Description
Hike to the peak of an active volcano that the Maasai call the "Mountain of God". View the sunrise from its peak.
The Maasai and the Sonjo refer to this volcano as the "Mountain of God". It sits just south of Lake Natron and is currently active. Unlike other volcanoes, Ol Doinyo Lengai erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This lava is significantly cooler, approximately 500–600 °C. This lower temperature makes the lava more fluid and appears black or brown in the sunlight. The lava cools quickly and has turned the landscape into a white otherworldly environment.
On this tour, we will leave Arusha or Moshi around 5 pm and drive to the base of the mountain. This journey will require a safari vehicle to get to the mountain. We will then begin our ascent up the mountain around midnight so that we can reach the peak for a sunrise view. We will then make our way back down to the base and will return back to town by the late afternoon.
