Most Lantau tours follow the same cable car and Big Buddha circuit. This private half-day excursion takes a completely different road, literally and culturally. Your guide was raised in one of Lantau's coastal villages and spent decades documenting the island's Hakka-speaking communities before they disappeared. He brings that knowledge directly to you, stopping at places no printed guidebook currently covers.
The route winds through the South Lantau Road corridor to reach a cluster of near-deserted Hakka villages inland from Cheung Sha. You will walk narrow lanes between century-old stone houses, see intact clan shrines still used for seasonal offerings, and hear firsthand accounts of how families once harvested salt in the tidal flats that stretch toward Fan Lau. At Tai O, instead of the standard waterfront photo stop, your guide introduces you to an elderly resident fish paste maker and explains the economic history of the stilt house community from the inside out.
The tour operates in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a maximum of four guests, keeping the experience intimate and flexible.
