Description

Explore World War I battlefields and memorials on a day tour. Visit Carrière Wellington, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, Hill 62, the Passchendaele Museum, Tyne Cot Cemetery, and the Menin Gate Memorial.
Begin with a visit to Carrière Wellington in Arras, an underground network of tunnels transformed by New Zealand soldiers to shelter up to 24,000 troops. Learn about the daily life of soldiers preparing for battle during the 1917 Arras offensive and see a memorial wall honoring the units that fought there.

Next, travel to the Nécropole nationale de Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, the largest French World War I cemetery, where over 42,000 soldiers are buried. See the Lanterne Tower and the Basilica, and visit the Anneau de la Mémoire, a memorial listing 600,000 soldiers who died in France during the war.

After lunch at Le Bistrot Dit Vin, continue to Hill 62, where well-preserved British trenches allow you to imagine life on the front lines. This site connects to the Third Battle of Ypres, also called Passchendaele, highlighting the extreme conditions, deadly mustard gas attacks, and the human cost of trench warfare.

Next, visit the Passchendaele Museum, located on the former battlefield. The museum features interactive exhibitions, recreated trenches, and authentic letters, uniforms, and artifacts, helping you understand the scale and brutality of the battle, as well as the resilience of the soldiers who fought there.

Continue to Cemetery Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world, holding around 12,000 graves with over 8,000 unidentified soldiers. The Tyne Cot Memorial commemorates 35,000 soldiers whose graves were never found, offering a sobering reminder of the sacrifices of Commonwealth troops.

Conclude at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, an arch honoring 54,896 missing soldiers of the British Empire. Learn about the nightly Last Post ceremony and the city’s role as a symbol of peace, reflecting on the scale of loss and the importance of remembrance.
