Description
Private full-day tour from Tokyo to Ogawa, Saitama: make UNESCO-listed Hosokawa washi paper by hand, then taste sake at the town's own brewery on the old street.
Ogawa has made Hosokawa washi paper by hand for over a thousand years, recognised by UNESCO as an intangible craft, and this private full-day tour from Tokyo gives you a real papermaking lesson rather than a museum case. Private, per-group, up to six guests.
We leave Tokyo around 08:30 for the roughly two-hour drive to Ogawa, known locally as the little Kyoto of Musashi for its old streets. An instructor at a working washi studio walks you through the whole process, from lifting wet pulp on a bamboo screen to setting your own sheet to dry, and you take home the paper you make. We follow with a short visit to a Saitama craft centre nearby, showing other local handwork alongside washi, then walk Ogawa's old street of timber storefronts to a small sake brewery for a guided tasting of what the town makes when it is not making paper. Lunch, at your own choice, is worked in around the workshop and tasting, in whichever order suits your group best that day.
The washi papermaking workshop and the sake brewery tasting are both included in your price, along with the van, driver-guide, fuel and water. Any extra paper, crafts or bottles you buy are your own cost. Sake tasting is restricted to guests aged 20 and over under Japanese law.
This suits travellers who want a genuine craft lesson with their hands rather than a shop visit, and anyone curious about a UNESCO-listed technique still made the same way it was centuries ago. The workshop runs on a reserved slot, which we book ahead of your date.
If any included stop, ticket or activity cannot run on your date because of weather, closure or availability, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed; an equivalent alternative is offered only if you prefer it.

INFORMATION IMPORTANTE
Pickup is around 08:30, back in Tokyo by early evening, about 9 hours door to door. The papermaking workshop is seated and hands-in-water, so bring a change of sleeves or roll them up; the old street walk is flat and easy. This runs year-round. Sake tasting is restricted to guests 20 and over by law; younger travellers can still join the papermaking and the walk. The workshop depends on a booked slot, which we confirm ahead of your date; if it changes because of the studio's schedule, we move the timing within your day, not the activity itself. If an included stop cannot run because of weather, closure or availability, you get a full refund, guaranteed; an alternative is offered only if you prefer it. We will send your pickup time and meeting details before the tour
