Description
Skip the bus tours. This is Rila Monastery, the sacred cave of St. Ivan, and a traditional Bulgarian picnic in an alpine meadow - a small-group day from Sofia. Guaranteed even for solo travellers.
Every day, dozens of buses pull into Rila Monastery, unload their passengers for a rushed hour, and leave. This is not that tour.
This is a full day in the Rila Mountains with a maximum of 8 guests, a personal guide, and three experiences that no bus tour can offer - including one that no other operator from Sofia includes at all.
Stop 1 - Rila Monastery: Bulgaria's Most Sacred Place
Founded in the 10th century by the hermit monk Ivan Rilski, Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's largest Orthodox monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage Site - set deep in a pine-forested valley beneath the highest peaks in the Balkans.
Your guide walks you through the complex - the arcaded balconies, vivid frescoes by masters of the Bulgarian National Revival, the gold iconostasis, and the 14th-century defensive tower. You will have genuine time here, not forty minutes between a bus schedule and a lunch queue.
Duration: approx. 1.5 hours. Free entry to monastery church.
Stop 2 - The Cave of St. Ivan Rilski: The Sacred Passage
A short drive leads to the forest trailhead, where a marked path winds through ancient spruce trees to the cave where Ivan Rilski spent years as a hermit - and where the monastery's entire story began.
The cave ends in a narrow tunnel through the rock. This is where the legend lives. Only those with a clean soul can pass through - the righteous slip through easily, while sinners find themselves stuck. For centuries Bulgarians have come here not just to test their soul, but to make a wish as they pass through. You enter the tunnel, hold your wish in your heart, and see what happens.
Beside the cave, a natural spring flows year-round - said never to freeze even in the coldest Bulgarian winter, and believed to bring good health to those who drink from it. Your guide will tell you the full story of St. Ivan and the spiritual significance of this place that most Rila visitors never reach.
The hike is easy to moderate, around 30 minutes each way through forest. Guests who prefer to wait at the trailhead are welcome to do so.
Duration: approx. 1.5 hours including hike.
Stop 3 - Kirilova Polyana: The Alpine Picnic
This is the moment no other tour from Sofia offers.
Ten minutes by car past the monastery, the forest opens into Kirilova Polyana - a vast alpine meadow at 1,450 metres, ringed by the peaks of Dvuglav, Zliya Zab, and Kupenite. Your guide unpacks a traditional Bulgarian picnic prepared fresh that morning - seasonal, local, always a surprise. Warm banitsa, Bulgarian yogurt, honest food that city restaurants rarely get right.
No queue. No shared table. Just your small group, the mountains, and one of the finest views in Bulgaria. Fully included in your tour price.
