Description
Explore the Gutanasar volcano, Tsaghkadzor ski resort, and Lake Sevan on a guided tour from Yerevan. Enjoy breathtaking views, visit ancient monasteries, and collect obsidian souvenirs.
Leave Yerevan and reach the first stop of your journey — the extinct Gutanasar volcano. From its 2,200-meter height, see a deep fissure running across the mountain, as if carved by a giant plow. Observe the layers of solidified lava in the cut, and collect a handful of obsidian as a souvenir — the black volcanic glass is scattered all over the local slopes.
Next, continue to the ski resort town of Tsaghkadzor. Thanks to its unique climate, the area became a training ground for generations of Olympic athletes. If you’d like, take the cable car up to 3,000 meters to enjoy magnificent views of Mount Ararat and Lake Sevan.
Visit a monastic complex dating back to the 11th–13th centuries. It was built by the influential Pahlavuni princely family, whose descendants later became renowned commanders, scholars, poets, and statesmen. Inside the complex, visit the family tomb.
Finally, head to the blue jewel of Armenia — the freshwater Lake Sevan. Located at 1,902 meters above sea level and surrounded by sculpted mountain ridges, it offers truly spectacular views. Learn about the lake’s mysterious origins and the unsuccessful attempts to interfere with its water balance.
Then, climb 200 steps up to reach the Sevanavank monastic complex. Visit two wonderful 9th-century domed churches, talk about the ambiguous story of the third building’s transformation, and enjoy a stunning view of the lake from 1,950 meters.
On the way back, take advantage of your SUV and drive along an abandoned old road on the slope of the Pambak Range, admiring the lake from an unusual angle.
