Description

Discover the history of the Jewish community in Brussels on a guided walking tour. See the Great Synagogue, explore the Jewish quarter of Mont des Arts, and learn about the Shoah.
Begin your tour with a visit to the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, where you’ll learn about the Jewish community in the Middle Ages and hear about the pogroms that took place during this time.

Next, head to the Mont des Arts neighborhood to explore the Jewish quarter. Stroll through the streets and learn about the history of the area. Continue to the Triangle Zone in Anderlecht, a working-class and immigrant Jewish neighborhood connected to the textile and leather trades.

As you walk, hear about the Jewish immigrants from the Netherlands, France, and Central and Eastern Europe who settled in Cureghem in the late 19th century. Learn about the trades they worked in, including textiles, clothing, leather, and related trades.

Among other notable places, see the Great Synagogue (interior visit only if the building is open), built between 1875 and 1878, and learn about the growth and emancipation of Brussels' Jewish community during the 19th century.
