Description
In this tour I'll take you through the history of Ghent. A story of vikings, war, kings and emperors. The story about our Golden Age, but also about the downfall of Ghent.
Ghent has been named Europe's Hidden Gem by Lonely Planet. A small town today, but rich with history. 400 protected monuments including several UNESCO world heritage sites. But how did this city come to be?
In this walking tour we'll explore the history of the city of Ghent. No boring history lesson. I bring the story to life with some necessary context, fun facts, bizarre anecdotes and amazing stories about the city and its citizens.
During the walk, we'll see all the highlights of this city. First we start in the Old Port of the city to talk about the founding of our city. After, we go to the picturesque Castle of the Counts of Flanders (Gravensteen). We then walk through more off-the-beaten path neighborhoods: Patershol and Prinsenhof. We'll see some hidden gems along the path: the fish market, the little graffiti street, etc. Next, we go to the three towers of Ghent: Saint-Nicholas Church, Belfry and the Cathedral. And finally I'll take you into the Cathedral and you'll learn the incredible story of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
