Description

Take a one-day trip from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo, the historic capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Explore Tsarevets Fortress, a majestic medieval stronghold standing proudly since the 12th cent
Your journey begins early in the morning from St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and follows a scenic road at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. An English-speaking driver will comfortably take you to Veliko Tarnovo. Despite the three-hour transfer from Sofia, the breathtaking landscapes and rich history make this journey well worth it.

Upon arrival, the tour coordinator will distribute audio guides and headphones to you. Therefore, you do not need to worry about having mobile internet.

The tour coordinator will accompany the group throughout the entire walking tour of Veliko Tarnovo. At each site, the coordinator will indicate the location number, which you will enter into the audio guide. The audio guide will provide all historical information and share interesting and little-known facts about these places in your preferred language. You will move comfortably, enter churches and museums.

Discover Veliko Tarnovo, a city that was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to the 14th century. Later, during the Ottoman conquest, it flourished as a center of trade for merchants and craftsmen, with commercial connections extending to Central Europe and North Africa.

Visit the church-mausoleum where Tsar Kaloyan, queens, and many other members of the royal family and Bulgarian aristocracy are buried.

Climb Tsarevets Hill, where you will find the remains of the castle and the church of the Bulgarian tsars. Visit the fortress, the Patriarchal Church, the Royal Palace, and Emperor Baldwin’s Tower.

Stroll along the Artisan Street, where you will have the opportunity to pass by workshops owned by Bulgarian families for generations, preserving ancient traditions. Take the chance to see a fully functional copper workshop, as well as a pottery workshop where you can observe the preserved technique of creating royal sgraffito ceramics from the 12th–14th centuries.

Then, stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants serving local cuisine and enjoy the famous Bulgarian dishes.

After that, begin your journey back to Sofia.

This tour is perfect for history enthusiasts and everyone who appreciates beautiful buildings, breathtaking landscapes, and the opportunity to learn more about Bulgaria.
