Description

Immerse yourself in Ethiopian culture with a multi-ethnic dinner and cultural experience in Addis Ababa. Enjoy a traditional welcome ceremony, a 4-course dinner, and a live music and dance show.
Begin with a hotel pickup and a short introduction to Ethiopia’s cultural diversity. Learn about the three pillars of Ethiopian culture: food, music and dance, and community rituals.

Arrive at the cultural venue to the fragrance of sinit incense. Be welcomed with a traditional bread and spice greeting, aromatic kosso incense, and optional cultural attire photos. Your cultural host introduces the evening’s theme: “Understanding Ethiopia Through Its People.”

Next, enjoy a short and engaging session teaching you about the major ethnic groups: Amhara, Oromo, Tigray, Gurage, Afar, Harari, and Southern Nations (Sidama, Wolaita, Konso, Hamar, Dorze). Learn how clothing, hairstyles, food, and rituals reflect identity.

Then, enjoy a curated dinner served in stages, with each course representing a different community.

Course 1: Highland Classics (Amhara & Tigray)
• Doro Wat (National dish)
• Tihlo (Tigrayan barley dish)
• Shiro Tegamino
Cultural Story: religious traditions, sem ena werq (wax & gold poetry)

Course 2: Oromo Food Heritage
• Chuko
• Chechebsa with honey
• Ancoote
Cultural Story: Gadaa system, Safuu (respect), Oromo coffee roots

Course 3: Gurage & Southern Nations
• Kitfo (mild/spicy)
• Kocho with spiced butter
• Wolaita beef stew
• Sidama bulla porridge
Cultural Story: weaving traditions, enset farming, music styles

Course 4: Desert & Eastern Ethiopia
• Afar camel milk dishes (optional tasting)
• Harari lentil bowls and spiced breads
Cultural Story: ancient walled cities, marriage traditions, spice routes

Next, enjoy a cultural drinks tasting experience. A cultural drinks host guides you through Ethiopian tej (honey wine), traditional araki, and the meaning of homemade alcohol in celebrations and community events. Learn how each region flavors its drinks differently.

Then, enjoy a full performance with dancers and musicians playing masinko, krar, washint, and kebero drums. Dances included: Eskista (Amhara & Tigray), Harari dance, Oromo Shaggooyyee, Wolaita high-energy dance, Somali Dhaanto, and Konso bouncing steps. Visitors are invited to join the dance floor at the end.

Next, enjoy a full Ethiopian coffee ceremony. A master coffee host performs all three stages of the coffee ceremony: roasting the beans, grinding by hand, and brewing the three rounds—Abol, Tona, Bereka. Learn the meanings of each stage, the spiritual role of coffee, and how it brings people together. Served with popcorn, roasted barley, and frankincense.

Finally, enjoy a story sharing and Q&A session. Ask questions about Ethiopia’s history, cultures, daily life, traditions, or cuisine. This creates deep cultural exchange.
