Description

Discover the real story of the von Trapp family on a private day trip from Kitzbühel. Visit iconic filming locations from "The Sound of Music" in Salzburg and explore the Salzkammergut lake district.
Begin your day with a pickup from your hotel in Kitzbühel, Kirchberg, Reith, Aurach, Jochberg, or St. Johann in Tirol. Settle into your private, air-conditioned car or minivan and enjoy a scenic drive through the Saalach Valley, passing the Loferer Steinberge mountains on your way to Salzburg. As you travel, your guide shares local tips and recommendations for the day.

Arrive at Hellbrunn Palace Park and see the famous glass gazebo from "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Next, head to Schloss Leopoldskron and take in views across the lake to the palace, whose lakeside terrace appears as the von Trapp villa, and where the boat scene was filmed.

Continue to Nonnberg Abbey, the Benedictine convent founded around 714 where the real Maria was a novice and where the nuns sing "Maria" in the film. Take a short uphill walk with views over the old town and visit the abbey church.

Next, visit Mirabell Gardens, home to the Pegasus fountain, the steps, and the hedge tunnel from "Do-Re-Mi." Then, enjoy a scenic drive past Lake Fuschl into the Salzkammergut lake district, the landscape from the film's opening aerial scenes.

Arrive in St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang and stroll along the lakeside promenade. See the birthplace of Mozart's mother and stop for coffee and cake. Then, drive to Mondsee and visit the Basilica of St. Michael, where the wedding of Maria and Captain von Trapp was filmed. Explore the old town square and have lunch by the lake.

Finally, relax on the drive back to your hotel.

In winter the lakes and villages are often covered in snow, and from late November the Advent markets in St. Gilgen and Mondsee add to the atmosphere: a perfect rest day from skiing.

Your guide shares local tips and recommendations, and you explore each stop at your own pace.
