Description
Discover Bhutan’s rich culture and spirituality on a 4-day tour. Visit Thimphu, Paro, and the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, and learn about the country’s unique philosophy of happiness.
Day 1: Arrival in Paro and Transfer to Thimphu
Arrive at Paro International Airport and receive a warm Bhutanese welcome with a traditional white khadar scarf. Enjoy a scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s serene capital nestled in the Wang Chhu Valley.
Stop at Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, built by the famous Tibetan saint Thangtong Gyalpo. Check in at a heritage-style hotel in Thimphu.
In the afternoon, visit the King’s Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the 3rd King, and observe locals circumambulating while chanting prayers. Explore the Tashichho Dzong, the “Fortress of the Glorious Religion,” serving as the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body.
Walk around Thimphu Clock Tower Square, interacting with locals and browsing traditional crafts. In the evening, attend a short talk by a local guide or monk on Gross National Happiness (GNH), Bhutan’s unique model integrating spiritual values with governance.
Day 2: Thimphu
Visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue, a 51-meter golden Buddha overlooking Thimphu Valley, and participate in a short guided meditation. Visit the National Library, home to ancient manuscripts preserving Buddhist philosophy and Bhutanese law.
Explore the Royal Heritage Museum (Ta Dzong), tracing the evolution of Bhutan’s monarchy and its deep spiritual foundation. Visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (School of 13 Arts) to see young artists learning traditional crafts such as thangka painting, sculpture, and wood carving.
In the afternoon, visit Simply Bhutan Museum, an interactive living museum that presents Bhutanese daily life, dress, and folk traditions. In the evening, attend an informal session on the role of Buddhist philosophy in Bhutan’s governance and happiness vision.
Day 3: Thimphu to Paro
Drive back to Paro Valley. Visit Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), an architectural masterpiece symbolizing harmony between the secular and the spiritual. Cross the beautiful wooden cantilever bridge below the dzong and visit Paro National Museum (Ta Dzong) for royal relics and historic thangkas.
In the afternoon, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples (7th century), built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Visit Drukgyel Dzong Ruins, a historic victory fortress symbolizing Bhutan’s unity and independence. In the evening, stroll through Paro Town, meet local artisans, and explore small handicraft shops.
Day 4: Paro
Early in the morning, hike (or take a pony ride) to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), Bhutan’s most iconic site perched on a 900-meter cliff. Learn the legend of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) who meditated here to subdue local spirits and spread Buddhism.
At the monastery viewpoint, spend quiet time reflecting on Bhutan’s teachings of compassion and balance. Return to the hotel for rest and packing. In the evening, attend a candle-light reflection on “What Happiness Means in Bhutanese Life.”
