We grew up in Rocinha. We still live here. When you book, you are talking to the same two people who will be waiting for you at the metro station, and your group is yours alone, up to 8 people. That is the whole idea: you set the pace, you ask whatever you want, and we stop wherever something catches your eye.

The climb

We meet at São Conrado metro station and go up the way everyone here goes up, on the back of a moto-taxi. It is short, it is slow, and it is one of the best rides in Rio. At the top is the Laboriaux viewpoint: Sugarloaf, the whole South Zone and the open ocean in a single frame. This is where most of our guests take their favorite photo of the entire trip.

The community

Walking down, we stop at Acorda Capoeira, a project run by Mestre Manel, who has been teaching kids here for over two decades. You watch a real class, the one that happens whether or not a visitor shows up.

Then we go into Rua 1 and the alleys around it, where the neighborhood actually lives. The bakery at the corner. The barber who has cut our hair since we were kids. Sound systems on the sidewalk. Houses built one on top of the other by the families who arrived from the Northeast with nothing and made a city inside a city. We will introduce you to people by name, because we know them by name.

The rooftop

We finish at Vista Show, a terrace in the middle of the community with a full 360° view. No crowd, no clock. This is usually where the best conversation of the day happens, and where visitors ask the questions they were too polite to ask at the start. Ask them. We have heard all of them, and we answer honestly, including the ones about safety.

What you take home

Rocinha is home to around 100,000 people and it is one of the most misunderstood places in Brazil. You will leave knowing how it was built, how it works, who runs it day to day, and why the people who live here are proud of it. That is a different souvenir than a photo from the road.
