Description
Explore Sarajevo's recent history on a guided half-day tour covering Yugoslavia, the 1984 Winter Olympics, the Siege of Sarajevo and its aftermath. Visit Tunnel of Hope, Trebević and other locations.
Discover one of the most important periods in Sarajevo's modern history on a guided tour that connects the story of socialist Yugoslavia, the 1984 Winter Olympics, the breakup of Yugoslavia, the Bosnian War and the Siege of Sarajevo.
Meet your local guide in Sarajevo and begin with the historical background needed to understand how a city that hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1984 became a besieged capital less than a decade later.
Travel through Sarajevo while visiting locations connected with both its Olympic history and the siege. Stop at the Yellow Fortress for a panoramic view over the city and learn how Sarajevo's geography influenced life during the siege. Hear about shortages of water, electricity, heating and food, as well as the ways residents adapted to daily life.
Continue past Kovači and through the city center while discussing important memorial sites, including Markale Market and the Memorial for the Children Killed During the Siege of Sarajevo.
Visit Sarajevo's former Olympic complex and hear the story of the 1984 Winter Olympics. See the Olympic Hall and Koševo Stadium and learn how Olympic facilities and surrounding areas were affected during the war.
Drive along the road widely known during the siege as Sniper Alley. See buildings and locations associated with this period, including the former Holiday Inn, which housed many international journalists reporting from Sarajevo.
The central stop of the tour is the Tunnel of Hope Museum near Sarajevo Airport. The tunnel was constructed beneath the airport runway in 1993 and connected the areas of Dobrinja and Butmir. It became a vital connection for the besieged city, carrying people and supplies and later infrastructure including communications and electricity cables. Today, a preserved section can be visited as part of the museum.
Watch archival material, see museum exhibits and walk through part of the original tunnel while your guide explains its construction, operation and importance during the siege.
After the museum, continue toward Trebević Mountain. Along the way, learn about the Dayton Peace Agreement and the administrative structure of post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina as you travel between Sarajevo and East Sarajevo.
Reach the 1984 Olympic bobsleigh and luge track on Trebević. Once one of Sarajevo's best-known Olympic venues, the track and surrounding mountain later became connected with the front lines during the siege. Walk along part of the track, now covered with graffiti, and see Sarajevo from the mountain above.
Finish the experience with a drive back to the city center while discussing how Sarajevo rebuilt after the war and how the events of the 1990s continue to form an important part of the city's contemporary identity.
