Description

Ride the historic yellow tram over the Lapa Aqueduct and explore bohemian Santa Teresa on foot with a local guide: Selarón Steps, Ruins Park viewpoints, museums, street art and hidden gems.
This small-group Santa Teresa walking tour is a 4.5–5 hour cultural and historical exploration of Rio de Janeiro's bohemian hilltop neighborhood, led by an expert English-speaking local guide. It is a respectful, sociologically rich neighborhood walk — not a favela tour.

Your adventure begins aboard the historic yellow bonde (tram) as it rattles across the Arcos da Lapa, the grand 18th-century Carioca Aqueduct, and climbs into streets shaped by a fascinating past. Around 1850, Rio's elite fled the yellow-fever epidemics of the crowded city center for these breezy, hilltop heights, building the colorful mansions that still line the cobblestones today.

At Parque Glória Maria (the former Parque das Ruínas), you'll stand where Belle Époque patron Laurinda Santos Lobo once hosted Brazil's greatest artists, and take in panoramic, photogenic views of Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer. From Largo do Curvelo to Largo dos Guimarães and peaceful Largo das Neves, you'll wander the "Montmartre of Rio" — an artists' quarter alive with vibrant street art, independent ateliers and quiet, atmospheric corners far from the crowds.

Your guide brings genuine historical depth: the world of the great novelist Machado de Assis; the story of cordel folk literature at the ABLC, recognized by IPHAN as Brazilian Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018; and honest, sensitive reflection on gentrification and the 2011 tram tragedy that this resilient community fought for years to bring back.

Along the way we spend our money in family-run cafés and shops, so your visit genuinely supports the people who call this hill home. The tour finishes at the world-famous Escadaria Selarón, the dazzling mosaic staircase of over 2,000 tiles that connects Santa Teresa down to Lapa.

With tiny groups, deep local commentary and a decolonial perspective you simply won't get from a standard sightseeing bus, this is the real Santa Teresa — seen through the eyes of someone who knows and loves it.
