Description
Explore Serra da Canastra on a 5-day wildlife safari from São Paulo. Search for maned wolves and giant anteaters while discovering waterfalls, scenic landscapes, and Brazil's wild Cerrado.
Embark on a 5-day wildlife safari from São Paulo to Serra da Canastra National Park, one of Brazil’s top destinations for wildlife observation, nature photography, and outdoor adventures. This unforgettable expedition combines breathtaking landscapes, spectacular waterfalls, and excellent opportunities to observe some of South America’s most iconic wildlife.
Our journey begins with a scenic drive to Delfinópolis, Minas Gerais, gateway to the Serra da Canastra region. Along the way, we visit the beautiful Paraíso Waterfall Complex, home to eight waterfalls surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the Brazilian Cerrado. The region is also known for endemic species, including the striking Horned Sungem hummingbird.
During the expedition, we stay in three different locations within the Serra da Canastra region. We begin in Delfinópolis at Pousada Quintal de Minas, continue to São João Batista da Canastra at Pousada da Quinquinha, and finish in Vargem Bonita at Pousada Manacá da Serra. Accommodations may be substituted with similar hotels or guesthouses depending on availability at the time of booking.
Over the following days, we explore both the upper and lower sections of Serra da Canastra National Park. Highlights include the spectacular Zé Carlinhos Waterfall, crystal-clear natural pools ideal for swimming, the impressive Garagem de Pedra viewpoint, and the iconic Casca d’Anta Waterfall, a breathtaking 186-meter (610-foot) cascade and one of Brazil’s most famous waterfalls.
Serra da Canastra is internationally recognized as one of the best places in the world to observe Giant Anteaters and one of the most reliable destinations for spotting the elusive Maned Wolf. As we travel through the park’s vast grasslands and scenic roads, we search for a remarkable variety of wildlife, including Pampas Deer, Greater Rheas, birds of prey, and many other species native to the Cerrado biome.
One of the expedition’s greatest highlights is the chance to observe the critically endangered Brazilian Merganser (Mergus octosetaceus), one of the rarest waterfowl species on Earth, with an estimated global population of only around 200 individuals.
Whenever wildlife is encountered, we stop for observation and photography, allowing time to appreciate natural behaviors and capture memorable images. This expedition is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, birdwatchers, and travelers seeking authentic encounters with nature.
No previous wildlife or photography experience is required. Join us and discover why Serra da Canastra is considered one of South America's premier destinations for wildlife observation and unforgettable outdoor adventures.
