Description
Put on a VR headset and watch Roman soldiers and Emperor Diocletian appear around you on the actual ruins of his palace. Two immersive scenes, one guided walk through 1,700 years of history.
Begin your journey at the Golden Gate, the northern entrance to Diocletian's Palace. Your licensed guide introduces you to Emperor Diocletian, a commoner from nearby Salona who became the most powerful ruler in the Roman Empire, and then did something no emperor had ever done: voluntarily walked away from power to retire in this very palace.
Put on your Meta Quest 3 headset. The ruins dissolve. The Golden Gate appears as it looked in 305 AD with towering marble walls, red Egyptian granite columns, and massive wooden doors reinforced with iron. Roman soldiers in full armor stand guard. Emperor Diocletian arrives at his newly completed palace after abdication, greeted by his personal guard. You are not watching a screen. You are standing inside this moment in full 360 degrees, while the real ancient stones remain visible beneath your feet.
Headset off. Your guide leads you through the narrow medieval streets of the Old Town, sharing stories of how a Roman military fortress slowly became the living city it is today. You pass hidden courtyards where ancient Roman walls meet Renaissance windows and modern balconies. Your guide reveals details most visitors walk right past: Latin inscriptions, Roman building techniques still visible in basement walls, traces of daily life spanning seventeen centuries. People have lived continuously inside this Roman palace for over 1,700 years.
The walk brings you to the Peristyle, the grand ceremonial heart of the palace. Headset on for the second time. The square transforms into its full Roman glory. Marble columns rise to their original height. The Protiron entrance stands complete with its triangular pediment and flanking Egyptian sphinxes. Citizens in Roman dress fill the courtyard. Empress Prisca watches from the colonnade. Emperor Diocletian himself steps forward to address his people as the crowd chants "AVE DIOCLETIANE" around you.
After this climactic scene, your guide takes you past the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, originally Diocletian's personal mausoleum and now one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use. Your guide shares the irony of a man who persecuted Christians now resting inside a church dedicated to one of his victims.
You continue into the palace underground chambers, one of the best preserved Roman interiors in the world. These halls are a mirror image of the imperial apartments that once stood directly above. Your guide explains how these chambers survived intact for seventeen hundred years while everything above was destroyed and rebuilt countless times.
Your tour ends on the Riva waterfront promenade after approximately 80 minutes. Every headset is personally fitted by your guide. You stand safely in one spot during each VR scene while the world transforms around you. Navigation is done through a simple handheld controller that your guide will walk you through before you start. No technical experience needed. Works perfectly over prescription glasses.
