For History and Anime Fans Who Want to See Old Tokyo's Real Buildings
Tokyo has lost most of its old buildings. This open-air museum inside Koganei Park saved about 30 of them by moving them here, from Edo-period houses to Showa-era shops. With a local guide, you'll learn who lived and worked in each building, and what daily life in old Tokyo was like.
We meet at the ticket gates of Hanakoganei Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line. From there we take a local bus, about 5 minutes, to Koganei Park West Gate, then walk a few minutes to the museum entrance. The bus fare and the museum admission are included in the price, and your guide takes care of both, so you don't need to worry about the details.
Inside, we start with the old townscape. You'll see Showa-era shopfronts, including a soy sauce shop, and a merchant house with an old iron safe and medicine boxes. Your guide will explain how these shops were run and what the neighborhood was like when they were in use.
The highlight is the public bathhouse, which first stood in the Senju area of Adachi Ward. Step inside and look for the painted Mt. Fuji mural and the old shop ads on the mirrors. Bathhouses like this were the heart of neighborhood life, and many visitors say this one recalls the bathhouse in Spirited Away, which makes for a fun comparison.
We'll also visit the home of Takahashi Korekiyo, a statesman who was killed in the 1936 incident. Your guide will tell you the story behind the house and the period it comes from. On the way, we pass reconstructed buildings from much earlier times, so you can see how Tokyo homes changed over the centuries.
The guided visit takes about 2 hours. Afterwards you are free to stay in the museum, have lunch at the udon restaurant inside, or relax in Koganei Park. Your guide can also show you how to take the bus back to Hanakoganei Station or Musashi-Koganei Station. The group is limited to 4 guests, so you can ask questions freely and move at a comfortable pace.
