Begin at the Tribune Tower and explore how its architecture and famous collection of stones present a particular image of the world. Continue to the site associated with Jean Baptiste Point DuSable and examine how Chicago remembers its first permanent non-Indigenous settler.
Next, follow the story of Fort Dearborn and consider why the events of 1812 have been described as both a battle and a massacre. Along the way, discuss Native perspectives, the power of historical storytelling, and the people whose voices are often missing from official accounts.
Conclude the walk with a group reflection on how cities construct public memory and how the stories we inherit influence the way we understand the present.
