Addis Ababa: 4-Day Semien Mountains Hiking Tour & Flights

Embark on a 4-day hiking adventure in the Semien Mountains. Enjoy a scenic flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar, explore the park with a local guide, and spot wildlife along the way.
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Gondar and Sankaber

Begin your adventure with an early domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar. Meet your guide and driver at the airport, and confirm that your permits and park entrance fees are arranged.

Drive from Gondar to Debark, then continue to Sankaber. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route or at a scenic picnic site. In the afternoon, embark on a short acclimatization hike around Sankaber. Walk on trails with views across the Semien escarpment, and look out for gelada baboons and lammergeiers (bearded vultures).

Overnight at a lodge or tent camp in Sankaber or a simple lodge near the park boundary.

Day 2: Sankaber to Geech Plateau

After an early breakfast, start your hike from Sankaber toward the Geech Plateau. Pass through highland meadows and cliff edges with panoramic views. Expect 4–6 hours of hiking with several viewpoints.

Stop for a picnic lunch on the trail with views of deep gorges. Continue to the Geech area, with frequent stops to view gelada troops, klipspringers, and raptors. Your guide will explain the flora, geology, and local culture.

Overnight in a lodge or camp in Geech or return to Sankaber for the same lodge.

Day 3: Chennek or Imet Gogo Viewpoint

Begin your longest and most dramatic day with an early start. Hike toward Chennek or Imet Gogo, depending on the route. This is usually the best place for cliff-top vistas, sunrise/sunset options, and sightings of Ethiopian wolves (rare, typically higher plateaus) and bearded vultures.

Expect sustained walking on ridgelines with steep drop-offs — a good head for heights is recommended. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the plateau, with more wildlife watching and photography opportunities.

Descend back to your chosen lodge or camp (Sankaber or Geech), or move on to another camp depending on your itinerary plan. Overnight at a lodge or tent.

Day 4: Return to Gondar and Addis Ababa

Take an optional short sunrise walk for photography and last sightings. Have breakfast at the lodge, then pack and transfer by vehicle from the park back to Gondar. Stop for lunch in Debark or en route.

Arrive in Gondar in time for your domestic flight to Addis Ababa. Aim for a mid-to-late afternoon flight to allow for a buffer. Arrive in Addis Ababa in the evening, marking the end of your tour.
