Embark on a 6-day journey from Addis Ababa to the remote Bale Mountains. Experience wildlife encounters, high-altitude hiking, volcanic landscapes, ancient forests, local village experiences, and the rarest animals in Africa — the Ethiopian wolf, mountain nyala, and Bale monkeys.
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Dinsho Wildlife Zone
Begin with a morning pickup from your hotel in Addis Ababa. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Rift Valley lakes and small Oromo towns. Savor a traditional Oromo lunch before entering the Bale Mountains via the Gaysay Grasslands. Take a guided sunset walk with chances to see mountain nyala, reedbuck, and warthogs. Spend the night in Dinsho Eco Lodge.
Day 2: Dinsho to Gaysay Plains to Harenna Forest
Start the day with sunrise wildlife spotting in the Gaysay Plains. Visit the Bale Mountains Research Center for a local conservation talk. Journey through the highlands toward Harenna Forest. Visit a honey-harvesting community and taste wild forest honey. Hike into the misty Harenna Forest looking for Bale monkeys. Spend the night in a forest eco-lodge.
Day 3: Deep Harenna Forest Exploration
Trek deeper into the ancient cloud forest. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a waterfall hidden inside the forest. Learn about medicinal plants with a forest elder. Visit traditional bamboo houses in a remote village. Return to your eco-lodge for a peaceful evening.
Day 4: Harenna Forest to Sanetti Plateau to Tulu Dimtu Summit
Drive upward into the Afro-alpine world of the Sanetti Plateau. Track the rare Ethiopian wolf with your naturalist guide. Stop at volcanic formations and lava-carved landscapes. Summit Tulu Dimtu (4,377m), Ethiopia’s second-highest peak. Capture the sunset on the plateau. Overnight in Goba.
Day 5: Konbola Crater Lakes and Highland Villages
Visit the rarely explored Konbola Crater Lakes. Take a guided walk to a highland community known for horse herding. Enjoy lunch prepared by a local family. Hike along the ridge overlooking the Harenna Escarpment. Return to Goba.
