Begin your adventure before sunrise, leaving while the Simien Highlands are still quiet and cool. Travel toward a known Gelada habitat with an experienced local guide and park scout, arriving before the animals become active. Walk quietly toward a suitable viewing area and wait for the first light.
As the sun rises over the escarpment, watch Gelada troops begin their morning routine. Observe them emerging from their overnight cliff areas, grooming one another, foraging through the highland grass, calling and communicating, moving across rocky slopes, and playing and interacting with younger Geladas. The changing morning light creates exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography.
After the wildlife viewing, your guide prepares a simple outdoor breakfast at a scenic viewpoint. Enjoy a selection of fresh seasonal Ethiopian fruits such as mango, papaya, banana, pineapple, avocado, and watermelon. Pair the fruit with fresh bread, local snacks, and freshly brewed Ethiopian coffee or tea.
Watch the morning landscape come alive while enjoying Ethiopian coffee with panoramic views of the Simien escarpment. After breakfast, take a short guided walk along the surrounding highland landscape. Look for Geladas from different viewpoints and, depending on conditions, other highland wildlife and birds. Your guide can also help you identify the animals and choose good photography positions.
