From Axum: 2-Day Simien Mountains Wildlife Tour

Day 1: Axum – Tekeze Gorge – Limalimo – Simien Mountains National Park

Depart Axum early in the morning and travel through some of northern Ethiopia’s most striking landscapes. The route descends into the vast Tekeze River Gorge, then climbs steadily through the misty highlands of Limalimo, where changing altitude creates visible shifts in vegetation—from dry lowland shrubs to lush montane forests.

Upon entering Simien Mountains National Park, meet the mandatory park scout and local guide. Continue toward the Chennek area, a prime zone for wildlife observation.

During an afternoon nature walk, observe large troops of gelada baboons, often grazing peacefully among the grasses. With some luck, spot the rare walia ibex, found only in the Simien Mountains. The area is also rich in birdlife, including bearded vultures (lammergeiers), thick-billed ravens, and other highland species.

The surrounding vegetation features afro-alpine grasslands, giant lobelia, everlasting flowers, and moss-covered escarpments that give the park its unique character.

Overnight stay is arranged inside the national park near Simien Lodge or a designated park lodge/camp, offering spectacular sunset views and a peaceful mountain atmosphere.

Day 2: Wildlife Trek & Afro-Alpine Landscapes – Drive to Gondar

After breakfast, enjoy a guided morning trek through the Chennek area toward scenic viewpoints such as Imet Gogo. This walk focuses on wildlife tracking, birdwatching, and understanding the park’s unique ecosystems.

As you move through open plateaus and cliff edges, your guide will explain the importance of the afro-alpine vegetation, medicinal plants, and how wildlife has adapted to life at high altitude. The trek is moderate and lasts approximately 3–5 hours round trip, with frequent stops for photography and observation.

After a picnic lunch, return to camp and begin the scenic drive out of the park via Debark, continuing on to Gondar, where the tour ends in the late afternoon or early evening.
