Wenchi Crater Lake Adventure: Fish, Ride & Play with Lunch

Embark on a day trip from Addis Ababa to Wenchi Crater Lake. Catch your own fish, enjoy a fresh lakeside meal, explore the highlands on horseback, and compete in outdoor games.
Depart Addis Ababa in the morning and travel toward the spectacular Wenchi Crater Lake. On arrival, meet your local guide and receive a short introduction to the lake, surrounding communities, and the day's activities. Take in panoramic views of the crater, green highlands, forests, and the peaceful lake below.

Head toward the lakeshore and begin your hands-on fishing experience with local guidance. Learn about local fishing methods, prepare your equipment, and try your luck catching fish from the crater lake. The fish you successfully catch during the experience is included as part of your lunch at no additional charge, subject to local fishing regulations, catch availability, and the day's catch. Enjoy your own catch together with traditional Ethiopian side dishes. If no fish is caught, an alternative lunch is provided.

After lunch, saddle up for a scenic horseback experience through the Wenchi highlands. Ride along established local trails with an experienced horse guide. Pass through highland farmland, forested areas, rural landscapes, scenic crater viewpoints, and local village surroundings. Stop along the route for photographs overlooking Wenchi Crater Lake. For travelers who want more adventure, a longer horseback route is available where locally available and safe.

After horseback riding, gather at a scenic open area for a series of relaxed Ethiopian-inspired outdoor games. Compete in a team fishing challenge, try a safe traditional-style target activity under local supervision, complete a simple coordination course using ropes and natural obstacles, and answer questions about local wildlife, Wenchi's landscape, Ethiopian culture, Oromo traditions, and the crater's natural environment. Finally, receive a list of photographs to capture, including the best lake view, best horse photo, wildlife, local life, crater landscape, and team photograph. The group chooses the winning team.

Slow down after the activities and enjoy freshly prepared Ethiopian coffee. Watch the coffee beans roast and enjoy the aroma while overlooking the crater lake. Traditional snacks can be served alongside the coffee. Before leaving, take a final walk to a scenic viewpoint. Enjoy the changing colors over the crater and surrounding highlands and capture your final photographs. Then begin the journey back to Addis Ababa.
