Description

Discover 2,000 years of Jewish history in Lyon, from medieval merchants to WWII rescue networks. Hear stories of resilience, resistance and survival that shaped the city's identity.
Discover nearly two thousand years of Jewish history in Lyon on this private walking tour, from the Middle Ages to the dramatic events of World War II. Through stories of merchants, rabbis, refugees and resistance fighters, uncover a lesser-known chapter of the city's history and the remarkable resilience of its Jewish community.

Begin in the heart of Lyon and learn about the first Jewish communities that settled in the city during the Middle Ages. Hear how periods of prosperity alternated with expulsions and restrictions, and discover how Jewish merchants and moneylenders contributed to the economic life of medieval Lyon.

Continue into the 19th century, when the community grew and flourished following the arrival of families from Alsace and Central Europe. Learn how Jewish bankers, merchants and craftsmen helped shape modern Lyon and discover the rise of a prosperous community integrated into the economic and cultural life of the city.

Admire the exterior of the Great Synagogue of Lyon, inaugurated in 1864 and still one of the city's most important landmarks. Through its architecture and history, understand the emancipation of French Jews and the growing confidence of the community during the 19th century.

The tour then turns to the darkest years of the twentieth century. Discover how Lyon became a center of resistance and rescue during the German occupation. Hear the stories of hidden children, clandestine networks and courageous men and women who risked their lives to protect others. Learn about the work of the OSE and the extraordinary acts of solidarity that helped save countless lives.

Through stories of tragedy, courage and survival, this experience reveals how generations of Jewish families helped shape Lyon and how their legacy continues to be remembered today. More than a tour of monuments, this journey offers a deeply human perspective on one of the most remarkable chapters of the city's history.
