Description

Discover the hidden gardens growing on Monteverde's ancient trees — orchids, bromeliads, mosses and ferns — while keeping an eye out for quetzals, toucans and other cloud forest wildlife.
Meet your naturalist guide at the main reception area of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve 15 minutes before your scheduled departure to prepare your macro photography setup. Step onto humid, high-elevation trails as mist drifts through ancient tree canopies, and shift your attention from the animals overhead to the astonishing plant life growing directly on the trees themselves. Using a high-definition spotting scope adapted for macro photography, examine the intricate structure of orchids, bromeliads, mosses, and ferns that make up the cloud forest's aerial gardens — plants that draw moisture and nutrients directly from the mist rather than the soil below. Limited to a maximum of 6 travelers, the small group lets your guide slow down at each specimen, pointing out details invisible from the trail: the miniature ecosystems living inside a single bromeliad, the different orchid species flowering at different elevations, and how epiphytes shape the cloud forest's unique water cycle. Learn how to align your smartphone with the scope to capture close-up macro photos of textures most visitors walk straight past. Throughout the 2.5-hour walk, your guide also keeps watch for the wildlife these hidden gardens support — keep your eyes and ears open for the Resplendent Quetzal, Three-Wattled Bellbird, toucans, and other birds and mammals that call the cloud forest canopy home. Conclude near the main visitor center having discovered a side of the cloud forest most tours never stop for, without missing the classic wildlife sightings along the way.
