Description
A tour of the history and traditions of Oaxaca, with Monte Albán, pottery and alebrije crafts, and an ancient mezcal experience with a Master Mezcalero.
Discover the history, traditions, and flavors of Oaxaca on a full-day tour that combines the legacy of the Zapotec civilization with some of the state's most iconic artisanal crafts and a mezcal experience with local producers.
Your experience begins with pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Oaxaca city. You'll travel in an air-conditioned tourist vehicle accompanied by a bilingual local guide, who will be with you throughout the tour and share the cultural context of each place.
The first stop will be Monte Albán, the ancient capital of the Zapotec civilization and one of the most important archaeological sites in Oaxaca, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. During the guided visit, you'll explore its grand plazas, temples, ceremonial structures, and other spaces that offer insights into the history, architecture, and organization of this ancient city. You'll also have time to enjoy panoramic views of the Central Valleys.
Next, we'll get to know the artisanal tradition of Oaxaca in San Antonio Arrazola, a community renowned for its alebrijes. You'll visit a workshop where you can learn about the process of carving, preparing, and transforming copal wood into colorful figures painted entirely by hand. You'll have the chance to watch the artisans at work and learn about the techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.
The tour will continue in San Bartolo Coyotepec, famous for its traditional Black Pottery. You'll meet local artisans and learn about some of the techniques used to shape, polish, and fire these pieces, whose distinctive finish is part of Oaxaca's artisanal identity.
The experience will culminate with a visit to an artisanal mezcal distillery, where you'll learn about the different stages of production of this iconic spirit. You'll discover how agave is processed and learn about processes such as cooking, grinding, fermentation, and distillation. A Master Mezcalero will accompany you during a guided tasting of five premium artisanal mezcals, explaining their aromas, flavors, and characteristics.
During the day, you'll have time to enjoy Oaxacan cuisine at a local restaurant, where you can choose from various traditional specialties. Lunch and drinks are not included.
This tour is designed for travelers interested in getting to know Oaxaca beyond its landmarks: an experience that connects Zapotec history, crafts, and mezcal culture, with direct contact with local artisans and producers.
At the end of the tour, we'll return to the city of Oaxaca. You will be dropped off at the Zócalo in Oaxaca city. Times are approximate and may vary depending on traffic, road conditions, and the amount of time spent at each site.
