Description
Tour of Ancient Corinth, where Jason of the Argonauts lived, Saint Paul, and the hidden gem of a monastery high on the rocks with monks who have been living with the same way since the 12th century.
Begin your journey at the Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel conceived by a ruler of Ancient Corinth and completed in the 19th century. Cut through solid rock, the canal is more than 6km long and 23m wide, with vertical sides rising 90m above the water.
Next, visit the Daphni Monastery, one of the greatest Byzantine masterpieces and a stunning example of architecture and religious iconography. The 11th-century monastery is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Continue to the Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary, a hidden Byzantine gem in Corinth. According to local tradition, a little boy named Leontios fell at the spot where it was built and was later found safe and sound. The monastery's catholicon was also built where the little boy was found.
Finally, explore Ancient Corinth, one of the largest cities of Greece, with a population of 90,000 in 400 BC. The Romans built a new city in 44 BC and later made it the provincial capital of Greece. For Christians, Corinth is well known from the two letters of Saint Paul.
