Start at the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, where the story of the city’s Sephardic community unfolds through artifacts, photographs, and testimonies. Continue to the Yad Lezikaron Synagogue, the modern spiritual center of the Jewish community, followed by the historic Monastirioton Synagogue, the only pre-war synagogue in Thessaloniki that survived the Holocaust.
Follow the elegant waterfront district of the former Exoches, where you will see Villa Modiano, Villa Allatini, Villa Bianca, Villa Mordoch, Villa Hirsch, Villa Kapantzi, and Villa Salem, magnificent mansions that reflect the prosperity and cultural influence of the city’s Jewish families during the late Ottoman and early modern period.
Continue to the Yeni Mosque, a unique monument linked to the Dönmeh community, before passing the site of the former Baron Hirsch Hospital, an important institution of Jewish social welfare. Visit Aristotle University, built on the grounds of the former Jewish cemetery, once one of the largest in Europe.
Proceed to the Jewish Cemetery of Stavroupoli, followed by the historic Hirsch District and the Old Railway Station, from where thousands of Thessaloniki’s Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 1943. Conclude your experience at the Menorah Holocaust Memorial in Eleftherias Square, a powerful tribute to the approximately 50,000 Jews of Thessaloniki who perished during the Holocaust.
