Description
Climb three Guatemalan peaks on a weekend hiking adventure. Camp in Totonicapán, walk through pine forests, and summit Cerro El Baúl, Campana Abaj, and Volcán Cuxliquel.
Set out on a 2 day mountain adventure from Guatemala City and summit three distinct peaks in the western highlands. This hiking and camping tour combines accessible climbs, highland scenery, and a night under the stars in a private camping area in Totonicapán. Along the way, take in cool mountain air, pine and pinabete forests, and wide summit views from Cerro El Baúl, Cerro Campana Abaj, and Volcán Cuxliquel.
Your journey begins early in the morning with transport from the K’ASHEM base camp in Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango. On the first day, tackle Cerro El Baúl with a light day pack. The ascent takes around 1 hour, followed by time at the summit to rest and take photos. After a 30 minute descent, continue to Totonicapán, where you’ll set up camp in a private area and spend the evening enjoying dinner and the mountain atmosphere before an overnight stay in camp.
On the second day, have breakfast, break camp, and begin the main hike to Cerro Campana Abaj. This 3 hour ascent leads to a striking summit known for its rock formations, which resemble a stone bell. The route is surrounded by beautiful pine and pinabete forest, adding a fresh and rewarding setting to the walk. After time at the top, descend over around 1.5 hours and begin the return journey toward Guatemala City.
In the afternoon, stop en route for lunch at your own expense before the final ascent of the weekend, Volcán Cuxliquel. This shorter climb takes about 45 minutes and offers one more summit before the 30 minute descent. After completing the third peak, continue back to Guatemala City, where the activity finishes at the K’ASHEM base camp in the evening.
