Description
Discover Bilbao in Italian with a historian and guide: Historic Bilbao, modern transformations, ties with Italy, local tips. This tour could end at the San Mamés football stadium.
Discover Bilbao from a unique perspective: a guided visit in Italian led by a historian, official tour guide, and art history teacher. From its origins in the 1300s, through industrialization, to its recent transformation, you will learn about the key milestones that have shaped the city and understand why it has become one of the most extraordinary examples of urban redevelopment in Europe. The walking itinerary takes you through the historic old town, the town center, and areas that have recently undergone renovation. As an official guide, your guide will also be able to provide explanations inside historic buildings, where possible.
We will visit the "Siete Calles" (Seven Streets) – the medieval heart of Bilbao – and their extension into other areas of the "Casco Viejo" (Historic Old Town). Next, we will move on to the modern city center, which is built around the Gran Vía. We will admire the exterior of the Guggenheim Museum, as well as the Art Nouveau buildings and the homes of the wealthiest families.
Finally, we'll discover the building that the locals love the most: La Alhóndiga. Originally a wine warehouse from 1905, it was transformed in 2010 by Philippe Starck and set designer Lorenzo Baraldi, with the collaboration of about a hundred Italian artisans.
In addition to the monuments, the tour offers an immersion in local life — including markets, squares, cultural centers, and museums — and provides practical tips for making the most of your stay in Bilbao and the Basque Country.
We'll discover architects, artists, and historical events. We will talk about the presence in Bilbao of Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni, Sophia Loren and Juventus... as well as the works left in the city by the Milanese architect Cini Boeri and the set designer Lorenzo Baraldi. We will even explore the presence of our province, Bizkaia, in the works of Giuseppe Verdi.
We will use the tram and, perhaps, the metro. Depending on the priorities of each group and the time available during these three and a half hours, we can conclude the visit at the San Mamés stadium ("La Cattedrale"), admiring the evocative view of its interior: the field, the stands, and so on. On request, the group can book lunch on site for approximately 1:30 PM (at a cost of about 25 euros), with a view of the stadium.
We have a radio guide system for large groups.
