Description
Explore Karla, Bhaja caves which offer insights into early Buddhist architecture, along with Pawna Lake and Lohagad Fort, popular destination for nature lovers, located amid the scenic Sahyadri hills
Approximately 2.5 hrs drive from Mumbai, located near Lonavala, the Karla Caves date back to around the 2nd century BCE and showcase some of the finest examples of early Buddhist rock-cut architecture. The main attraction is a grand chaityagriha (prayer hall) with a large stupa, intricately carved pillars, and a stone façade adorned with elephant sculptures. These caves reflect the Hinayana Buddhist tradition and were an important monastic site.
Close to Karla, the Bhaja Caves are slightly older, also built in the 2nd century BCE, and consist of 22 rock-cut caves including viharas and a chaitya hall. Known for their wooden beam-inspired ceilings and a group of 14 stupas, these caves provide deeper insight into early Buddhist monastic life and artistic traditions. The site also features carvings of dancers and musicians, adding to its cultural richness.
After your visit to the caves you will head to Lohagad Fort, Perched at an elevation of 1,033 meters, is a historic hill fort that played a strategic role during the Maratha Empire, especially under Shivaji Maharaj. The fort features a long, winding entrance and panoramic views of the Sahyadri ranges.
Just a short drive from the fort lies Pawna Lake, a serene man-made reservoir surrounded by rolling hills. It’s a popular destination for nature lovers and campers, offering stunning views, especially at sunrise and sunset. With its cool breeze and peaceful setting, the lake is ideal for picnics, boating, and overnight camping, providing a refreshing contrast to the historical sites nearby.
Together, This tour offers a rich mix of heritage, spirituality, and scenic charm, perfect for a memorable escape into Maharashtra’s cultural and natural landscape.
