Depart from the center of Sorrento in an air-conditioned bus with an expert guide for a 4-hour excursion through history. You will arrive at Herculaneum for the walking tour. Thanks to its excellent climate and its seaside position, Herculaneum grew into a holiday destination for wealthy Romans who built and bought estate there.
After the eruption of Mount Vesuvio in 79 BC, the town lay buried for centuries. It wasn't until 1738 that digs began in Herculaneum, but it took a long time before the town was brought back to light. It was discovered that Herculaneum was hit by a pyroclastic flow, so the ruins are well preserved and its visitors have a much better idea of what a Roman town may have looked like.
The excavations are still in progress, and only a part of the town can be seen, so the knowledge of an expert local guide will make the experience even more suggestive and unforgettable. At the end of the tour the bus will return to the main meeting point in Sorrento.
