Description

Discover the Japan Alps on a private day trip from Kanazawa. Visit Shirakawa-go and Takayama, to the Shiroyama Viewpoint, and enjoy a winter picnic with hot cocoa and local snacks.
Begin your journey with a drive to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its Gassho-zukuri (prayer-hand) farmhouses. Instead of just staying in the tourist center, take to the Shiroyama Viewpoint. In winter, the path is covered in thick, soft snow, offering a magical contrast against the dark wooden roofs of the village. It is a moderate walk that provides the best panoramic views.

Pack a thermos of hot cocoa or green tea and some local Gohei-mochi (grilled rice cakes with miso glaze). Find a quiet bench near the river or an elevated spot away from the crowds to enjoy a peaceful, crisp winter picnic amidst the falling snowflakes.

Capture the village in the early morning or late afternoon. The reflection of the snow-covered roofs in the surrounding rice paddies (or snowy fields) is a photographer’s dream.

After the serene nature of Shirakawa-go, head to Takayama, a city known as "Little Kyoto." Wander through the preserved old town. The narrow streets are lined with traditional merchant houses, sake breweries, and craft shops. The snow piles up beautifully here, creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

Spend time walking through the Higashiyama Temple Area. It features a quiet walking trail that links several historic temples. Walking through these temple grounds while they are blanketed in snow is incredibly meditative and far less crowded than the main shopping streets.

No visit to Takayama is complete without sampling Hida Beef. Whether you prefer it as nigiri sushi or grilled on a skewer, the rich flavor is the perfect fuel for a cold day. Visit the local morning markets to try local pickles and warm snacks.
