Description

An authentic tea experience away from tourist crowds in a 150-year-old Kyoto machiya. We offer a genuine cultural encounter where you learn the history, architecture, and spirit behind Japanese tea!
>

This is a tea experience designed for those seeking something real - not a staged performance for tourists, but a quiet encounter with living culture.

The setting is a 150-year-old Kyoto machiya located away from the busy sightseeing districts. The surrounding streets remain calm and residential, allowing you to step out of the crowds and into a slower rhythm of Kyoto life.

Before preparing matcha, you are introduced to the history of the machiya and its role in Kyoto’s urban culture. Rather than using the building as a simple backdrop, we explore how architecture, light, spatial design, and daily life shaped the development of tea practice. This context allows you to understand not only how tea is prepared, but why it is prepared in this way.

Seated comfortably on chairs, you are guided step by step by a tea master with over 16 years of formal training. After observing a live preparation, you will prepare matcha yourself at a rare Misonodana tea shelf - a professional setting not commonly accessible to guests.

The matcha served is high-grade tea typically reserved for practitioners, paired with carefully crafted plant-based sweets designed specifically for this experience.

With a maximum of 6 guests, the atmosphere remains intimate and unhurried. There is space for questions, conversation, and reflection - allowing you to engage with the deeper cultural and historical layers of Japanese tea.

This experience is ideal for travelers who wish to move beyond sightseeing and connect with Kyoto’s authentic spirit in a meaningful and personal way.
