Discover Nagoya: Castles, Temples, Culture & Cuisine
Begin your journey at Nagoya Castle, the majestic symbol of the Tokugawa shogunate’s power during the Edo Period. Although heavily damaged in World War II, the castle has been beautifully restored, with ongoing efforts to recreate its original splendor.
One of its most iconic features is the pair of golden “shachihoko”—mythical tiger-headed carp perched on the roof. These shining ornaments are believed to protect the castle from fire and are a proud symbol of the city.
Step into the Hommaru Palace, carefully rebuilt using traditional materials and techniques. Walking through its elegant tatami rooms and painted sliding doors feels like stepping into history. Inside the grounds, you’ll find displays of samurai armor, swords, and stories of the Owari clan—bringing the world of feudal Japan to life.
Next, head to Osu Kannon Temple, a beloved Buddhist site dedicated to the Bodhisattva of compassion. Its bright red structure and peaceful courtyard offer a tranquil contrast to the city’s energy. Watch locals light incense or draw omikuji (fortunes)—a glimpse into living tradition.
Surrounding the temple is the Osu Shopping District, a lively maze of over 1,200 shops and eateries. The area is famous for its mix of the traditional and trendy: antique kimono stores sit beside anime shops, and Japanese sweets vendors compete with bubble tea cafés. It’s a paradise for souvenirs, quirky finds, and delicious local snacks like miso katsu skewers and taiyaki.
We’ll then explore Sakae, Nagoya’s modern downtown. This energetic hub is filled with department stores, entertainment, and architecture. Visit Oasis 21, a futuristic glass structure nicknamed “Spaceship-Aqua,” where you can enjoy views of the Nagoya TV Tower, especially beautiful when lit at night.
Just steps away, enjoy premium shopping at Mitsukoshi or Matsuzakaya, or wander underground arcades filled with fashion and food. It’s the perfect place to experience local urban life.
No tour is complete without tasting Nagoya’s signature cuisine. Depending on your schedule and taste, we can stop at a local restaurant to enjoy:
• Miso katsu – pork cutlet with bold red miso sauce
• Tebasaki – crispy, spicy-sweet chicken wings
• Kishimen – flat udon noodles in savory broth
• Ogura toast – toast with butter and sweet red bean paste, a local breakfast favorite
These dishes are more than food—they’re a reflection of Nagoya’s soul.
Whether it’s centuries-old castles, buzzing street markets, or futuristic towers, this tour captures the unique rhythm of Nagoya. It’s a perfect blend of tradition, culture, and modern energy—all in one unforgettable day.
