Stop 1: Takayama Old Town · 2 hours (11:00–13:00)
The bus heads north through Gifu's mountains. Two and a half hours later, you arrive in Takayama.

Called "Hida's Little Kyoto," but it has its own soul.

You start on Takayama Old Town—a perfectly preserved Edo-period street. Wooden buildings with dark lattice doors, low eaves, fabric noren curtains. Every shop looks like it stepped out of a centuries-old painting. Stone pavement underfoot. Sky overhead. Old shops selling Hida beef skewers, matcha sweets, and handmade crafts.

11:00 to 13:00—2 hours. Enough time to walk the main street, turn into alleys, step into an old shop, enjoy Hida beef, sip matcha, and just stand in the middle of the street watching time pass.

Hida beef is Takayama's soul food. Melt-in-your-mouth beef sizzling on an iron plate, the savory aroma filling the street. Find a shop that catches your eye, order Hida beef sushi or grilled skewers, and sit by the window watching the old street go by. Not a beef eater? Takayama has plenty—soba, Hoba miso, Gohei mochi, handmade tofu. 2 hours is enough to wander, browse, and eat at your own pace.

Stop 2: Shirakawago · 2 hours (14:00–16:00)
Leaving Takayama, the bus continues north. Through valleys and streams. The scenery grows greener. Then you arrive at a UNESCO World Heritage site—Shirakawago.

Shirakawago is Japan's most famous gassho-zukuri village. Gassho-zukuri means "praying hands"—steep thatched roofs that look like hands pressed together in prayer. Built without a single nail. Every house looks like it came from a fairy tale.

You enter the village. Gravel crunches underfoot. Old wooden buildings on both sides. Thick thatched roofs like giant hats. Narrow lanes. Water channels flow gently along the edges—melted snow from the mountains, clear to the bottom.

2 hours. 120 minutes. Not a drive-by. You actually step inside.

You can do so much: Step inside Kandaya and see beams darkened by centuries of hearth smoke. Stand beneath the 1,000-year-old yew tree at Myozen-ji. Walk the narrow paths to the farthest gassho houses. Turn around at the bridge—the whole village framed against the blue sky.

Return: Arrive Nagoya around 19:00
Leaving Shirakawago, the bus heads south. Today you visited two places—one lively and full of warmth, one quiet as if breathing. Two paces. Both perfect.
