Description
Discover the historic and spiritual sites of Nara and Mt. Koya on a day tour. Visit Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple, and the sacred Buddhist mountain of Mt. Koya.
Begin your journey in Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital. Enjoy a relaxing stroll through Nara Park, home to approximately 1,200 wild deer that roam freely throughout the grounds. These friendly deer are considered sacred messengers and are famous for their charming habit of “bowing” when offered food. You may feed them special crackers known as shika-senbei, which are available locally.
Within Nara Park, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Todai-ji Temple, which houses one of Japan’s three colossal Great Buddha (Daibutsu) statues—an awe-inspiring symbol of Japanese Buddhism.
Next, stop at the Ichinohashi Tourism Center, where you can take a break and enjoy Japanese cuisine. This is a perfect opportunity to relax, have lunch, and experience local flavors before continuing the journey.
In the afternoon, travel to Mt. Koya (Koyasan), one of Japan’s most sacred Buddhist sites and the center of Shingon Buddhism. Explore Kongobu-ji Temple, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, renowned for its elegant sliding-door paintings and tranquil atmosphere.
Then, walk through the mystical Okuno-in, a sacred forest path lined with thousands of ancient stone lanterns and tombstones, leading to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Surrounded by towering cedar trees and spiritual calm, Mt. Koya offers a deeply peaceful and unforgettable experience.
After a day filled with history, culture, and nature, sit back and relax on a comfortable ride back to your departing station, reflecting on the timeless beauty of Japan’s ancient capitals.
