Description
Discover the charm of Otaru and the natural beauty of the Shakotan Peninsula on a day trip from Sapporo. Stroll along the Otaru Canal, visit the Otaru Music Box Museum, and see Cape Kamui.
07:30 - 08:00 | Meeting & Departure
Begin your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel within 3 km of Sapporo Station or meet your group at the Sapporo Station East Exit Group Waiting Area. Then, set off on your adventure to the Otaru Canal.
Upon arrival, take a peaceful stroll along the canal, lined with stone warehouses from the Taisho era.
Admire the historic architecture and enjoy the charming atmosphere of this old port town.
Next, step into a fairy tale at the Otaru Music Box Museum.
Located in a historic red-brick building, it houses one of Japan’s largest collections of antique music boxes, handmade pieces, and delicate glass carousels from around the world. Enjoy live performances of century-old pipe organs or try a DIY workshop to create a unique music box of your own. Don't miss the iconic Steam Clock outside, which whistles and puffs steam every hour.
Continue to the LeTAO Main Store, Hokkaido's most famous confectionery brand. Try their signature "Double Fromage" cheesecake, featuring layers of Italian Mascarpone and Hokkaido cream cheese. Shop for premium souvenirs or enjoy exclusive desserts and tea in the second-floor café. Finally, visit the rooftop observatory for a free, panoramic view of Otaru Port and the historic streets.
Next, head to the Shakotan Peninsula, a hidden gem famous for the breathtaking "Shakotan Blue" sea. Walk the scenic trails of Cape Kamui or taste world-class local seafood like sea urchin (Uni) and octopus.
Enjoy a leisurely lunch at your own expense at one of the recommended restaurants.
After lunch, visit Cape Kamui, where a 20-minute walk along the ridge-line path leads you to the very tip of the cape. Admire the 360-degree vista of the turquoise ocean and rugged cliffs. The historic Cape Kamui Lighthouse stands at the end, overlooking the vast Sea of Japan.
Finally, visit Shimamui Coast, ranked as one of "Japan’s Top 100 Beaches." Walk through a narrow, dark pedestrian tunnel that opens up to a stunning, sudden reveal of the emerald-blue sea. The contrast between the dark tunnel and the brilliant ocean is unforgettable. It is a perfect spot for photography and feeling the powerful rhythm of the waves against the rocks.
After a full day of exploration, return to Sapporo, with an expected arrival back at Sapporo Station around 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
