Lake Baringo is an alkaline lake, home to an abundance of blue-green algae, which sustains the large population of flamingos in the area. Over 135 bird species have been recorded here, including the little grebe, pratincole, swift, little bee-eater, cape wigeon, yellow-billed stork, African spoonbill, augur buzzard, gabber goshawk, water dikkop, great tit, starling, hornbill, and crombec. The area is also home to a herd of the rare Greater Kudu, along with other mammals such as buffalo, zebra, baboons, warthogs, caracals, spotted hyenas, impalas, and dik diks.
