Description

Walk through Split and see how old streets and squares that were lively long ago are still filled with people and everyday moments today.
Split is a city where the past and present live side by side.
Instead of erasing what came before, each generation has shaped the city, giving new life to old streets, squares, and buildings. On this tour, you will see how everyday places changed their role over time, creating a clear comparison between then and now. This tour is designed for a small group of up to 7 people, ensuring a personal and engaging experience.

The tour begins inside Diocletian’s Palace, built as a Roman imperial residence. Over the centuries, its walls, streets, and courtyards were reused and transformed into homes, passages, and public spaces, turning the Palace into the living core of the city.

Along the Riva, once the emperor’s private waterfront, we follow the transformation into Split’s main public promenade and gathering place.

At Fruit Square and People’s Square (Pjaca), former centers of trade, governance, and noble life are today cultural spaces with galleries, libraries, and public events, while still serving as important meeting points.

The Toplice area tells another story of change. What began as natural springs later served public health and, until recently, functioned as part of the city’s healthcare system.

The open space of the Republic Square (Prokurative) reflects 19th-century ambition and urban planning, and today continues to host major public events. Marmontova Street, created as a symbol of modernization, is now the central street of Split. Gajo Bulat Square shows how historical squares retain their cultural significance even as the surrounding city evolves.
The walk ends near Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski), a medieval bishop who became a modern symbol of Split.

This Then & Now approach is more than sightseeing. It helps visitors understand how Split’s history lives on in its streets, squares, and buildings, and how past and present coexist to shape the city’s identity. By comparing what these places were and what they are today, the tour gives a deeper, more meaningful perspective than a simple visit to landmarks.
