Begin your day with a convenient hotel pickup and travel by air-conditioned vehicle to Port Louis, the capital. The drive takes about 45 to 60 minutes and gives you a first look at the island's sugar-cane landscapes.
Start at the Aapravasi Ghat, the landing site where indentured laborers arrived from India and elsewhere from the 1830s onwards. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a moving introduction to the story behind modern multicultural Mauritius.
Next, walk to the harbor front for a relaxed stroll along the promenade. Browse the craft stalls and boutiques, enjoy the views over the port, and pick up gifts and souvenirs. The Blue Penny Museum is nearby if you would like to add some culture.
