Description

Discover how Day of the Dead is celebrated in Oaxaca on an evening tour of three iconic cemeteries. Visit the General Pantheon, Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, and Santa Maria Atzompa.
Experience one of the most significant nights in the Oaxacan calendar and discover how the communities keep the tradition of the Day of the Dead alive.

Accompanied by a tour guide, begin the experience by getting to know the historic Panteón General de Oaxaca, also known as the Panteón San Miguel. This cemetery preserves more than 190 years of history and is linked to episodes such as the smallpox and cholera epidemics that affected Oaxaca during the 19th century. Important figures in Oaxacan history also rest among its graves.

Continue on to Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, a community known for its traditional Velada de los Fieles Difuntos (Evening of the Faithful Dead). On the night of October 31, families gather in the cemeteries among marigold flowers, candles, incense, prayers, and mementos to symbolically accompany their loved ones.

End in Santa María Atzompa, where the tradition known as La Alumbrada is preserved. During this celebration, the graves are covered with flowers and candles while families stay with their deceased. The glow of the candles transforms the cemetery and creates one of the most solemn moments of the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca.

Throughout the tour, your tour guide will help you understand the meaning of the cempasúchil flowers, the copal, the candles, the offerings, and other customs that are part of this tradition.

Rather than just observing a celebration, this experience aims to bring you closer, in a respectful way, to a living and deeply familiar tradition.
